Tips and tricks to grow date palm fast

If you are considering getting a date palm, you will be aware of the fact that they can take quite long to grow and produce fruit. While there is always the option of buying a mature palm tree, but this can be quite costly and time consuming to plant. Besides, there is the additional hassle of transportation of such a large tree. Most people prefer to grow date palms from shoots or smaller trees. This allows the date palm time to blend in with the environment of your garden, which will ensure that it grows strong. However, there are certain things that you can do to make your date palms grow even faster.

Plant it properly

The main factor that will determine how fast your date palm grows is the method of planting. When planting a date palm, you should ensure that the hole is at least twice the size of the roots. This will ensure that it is firmly laced in the soil. You should also cut any circular roots in a way that will encourage them to grow outwards. This helps the roots spread faster in the soil and will have an impact on the growth rate of the plant. Finally, you should create a circular basin around the plant that will help it hold more water, promoting faster growth.

Add nutrients to the soil

As with all trees, date pals will require specific nutrients for faster growth. Depending on the quality of your soil, you can add nutrients twice a year to ensure maximum absorption. You can buy date palm fertilizer that contains the specific nutrients that promotes growth in these palms. If you cannot find date palm fertilizer, then you can use general palm fertilizer as an alternative, although date palm fertilizer is preferred. Apply the fertilizer when the weather starts to get warmer after winter so that the palm will receive its required nutrients during the growth season. This will help the date palm grow much faster.

Remove dead fronds

Once the dry weather kicks in, you will notice older leaves that have turned brown. These are dead leaves and often take up extra nutrients of the plant. Cut these dead fronds as close to the main trunk as possible so that the tree can use all available nutrients for growth of new leaves. Although this may be a bit difficult to do if your tree is large, you will see the benefits of this in faster growth. However, make sure to do this in the dry season to prevent cutting living leaves off the tree as this will slow down its growth.

Water it regularly

While date palms are known for thriving in dry climates, a lack of water will make them grow slower. You should water the date palm slowly, but steadily. Do not use a fast hose or throw a bucket of water at once as this may prevent it from going deep. Date palms usually need watering once a week, depending on the weather.
